Snowball Classic Tournament Rules

​

COACHES - Only 2 (two) coaches per team on the bench during their game. NFHS rules are 1 (one) coach may stand (not kneel) in the designated coaching boxes assigned.

 

SCORE & TIME KEEPER – Prior to the start of each game, each team must provide a person for the scorer’s table. One will run the clock & one will keep the official book. A TEAM scorekeeper may sit at the table IF space is available. All persons at the scorer’s table are not coaches & may be removed from the table if necessary by the official.

 

START TIMES - Games should start at their scheduled time. Please be aware that close games & overtimes could cause delays. A minimum of 4 (four) minutes will be allowed for warm-up. FORFEIT TIME: 5 (five) minutes after the warm up time has been completed.

THE BALL - A size 28.5 regulation basketball will be used for all games. Exceptions: 1) A size 27.5 regulation basketball will be used for all 3rd grade games. 2) Based on availability, a boy’s high school regulation ball (29.5) may be used provided both coaches agree before game begins. Referee must determine suitability of ball.

 

ELIGIBILITY - Players may play up in grade, but not down in grade. Players may only play on 1 (one) team per grade division. A girl may play on a boy’s team, but a boy cannot play on a girl’s team. Tournament official has authority to ask for proof of grade. Any team proven to have used an ineligible player during the tournament will suffer forfeiture of games played with ineligible player. No refund of money due to forfeiture. Team may continue to play with an ineligible player (forfeiting games) or without the ineligible player with no penalty.

 

ROSTERS - The official team roster will be taken from each team’s first tournament game. Please include players that may not be in attendance for that first game as players CANNOT be added to the roster after the first game. There is a maximum of 12 (twelve) players per roster, however there are only 10 medals awarded.

 

JERSEYS - Teams must use same color jersey each having a number with no duplicates. Any single or two digit number is allowed. Only one jersey may be allowed without a number & be known as 0 (zero) or blank. In case of duplicate team colors, referee will determine team color. If available pinnies will be worn by the away team. 

 

THE CLOCK - Two 18 (eighteen) minute halves will be played. The clock will stop for time outs only until the last 2 (two) minutes of the half & game when the clock will stop on all whistles. Halftime is 4 (four) minutes. Exception: Once a lead of 20 (twenty) points has been established, the clock will only stop for injury or time outs. Overtime: Clock stops on each whistle.

 

OVERTIME - Overtime periods will be 2 (two) minutes long & begin by using the using the alternating possession arrow.

 

TIME OUTS - Each timeout length is 45 (forty five) seconds. Each team will receive 4 (four) timeouts per game that will not carry over into overtime. There will be 1 (one) timeout per team for each overtime with no carry over.

 

LANE VIOLATION - All grades will have a 3-second violation in the lane. Exception: Grade 3 will have a 5-second violation.

FREE THROWS - All grades will shoot from the existing free throw line. Exception: Grade 3 will begin from behind the first hash mark extended in front of the existing line & may cross over. An attempt to rebound by the shooter before the ball hits the rim will be deemed a lane violation. Grade 4 will begin from behind the existing line & may cross over. An attempt to rebound by the shooter before the ball hits the rim will be deemed a lane violation.

FULL COURT PRESSURE - Full court pressure will be allowed for all grades. Exceptions: GRADE 3 will only be allowed to apply a full court press during the final 2 (two) minutes of each half. GRADES 3 through 6: No full court pressure with a lead of 10 (ten) or more points. JUNIOR HIGH: No full court pressure with a lead of 20 (twenty) or more points. A violation of the rule will result in a warning being issued. Continued violations may result in a technical foul issued to the offending teams coach.

TECHNICAL FOUL - An assessed technical foul will result in an automatic 2 (two) points added to the opposing team’s score as well as ball possession. ***No free throws will be shot*** Exception: Junior High will shoot technical fouls.

FOUL LANGUAGE - Use of foul language by player will result in a technical foul. Use of foul language by a coach WILL result in dismissal from the game & assessment of a technical foul. A SECOND incident WILL result in dismissal from the tournament with no refund. See rule below for use of foul language by a spectator

​

SPECTATOR CONDUCT - Disorderly conduct will not be tolerated. At the discretion of the referee, the head coach may receive a warning. FIRST Spectator Incident: The head coach receives a technical foul & the spectator(s) may be dismissed from the game. If the incident involves foul language, the spectator will be dismissed from the gymnasium. Refusal to leave the gymnasium, team will suffer forfeiture of game with no refund. SECOND Spectator Incident: Team forfeiture from tournament with no refund.

OTHER RULES - NFHS game rules will be in effect if not covered by the stipulations addressed on this page
